Gastronomy / Wine in the Slovene Littoral

White or red, aromatic, strong, rich or light, dry, off-dry or sweet, table, quality and premium - we're of course talking WINE!

In Slovenia, there are three wine-bearing regions: the Littoral, the Drava Valley and the Sava Valley.

Their natural conditions significantly impact the sensory characteristics of wine. As a result, typical grape varieties are different among the three wine-bearing regions of Slovenia.

The Littoral

Vipava Valley, Slovene Istria, Gorizia Hills and Karst are famous in particular for red wine – refosco as the predominant variety, followed by ribulla, merlot, malvasia, chardonnay, sauvignon, cabernet sauvignon.

Sava Valley

Lower Carniola, Bizeljsko-Sremič and White Carniola are famous particularly for red varieties, žametovka being the most characteristic. Others include welschriesling, blaufränkisch, kraljevina etc.

Drava Valley

Styria and the Mura Valley may be attributed the most representative varieties of welschriesling, furmint, Rhine riesling, chardonnay and pinot blanc.

Select wines from the three of Slovenia's wine-bearing regions with 14 districts are ranked among the top in the world in terms of quality. Each wine-bearing region boasts its own selection of varieties as a result of the differences in growing sites, the climate and cellaring. Slovene vineyards are located in the centre of the European wine belt. These ideal vineyard locations of the Slovenian wine-bearing regions are not unlike regions such as Burgundy in France, while the interplay of the climate and soil in Slovenia provides for the increasing variety in the assortment of wines. In Slovenia, as many as 52 grape varieties are successfully cultivated!
