Cycling, thermal enjoyment and wine in Pomurje

Cycling in Pomurje

Pinnacles of the cycling adventure:
A crossroads of four countries (Slovenia, Austria, Hungary and Croatia), Goričko Nature Park, the Mura River, Lake Bukovnica with energy points, wine roads in Jeruzalem, thermal enjoyment in Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice and bathing in black thermal mineral water.
Day 1: The Austrian tour
The best place to start the tour is in Austria, in Mureck, next to the Röcksee Lake. Take the Mura Cycling Route on the Austrian side and ride to Bad Radkersburg and across the border to Gornja Radgona. Once there, treat yourself to some sparkling wine in the local wine cellar. After short refreshment with fine wine, continue to Radenci and Zdravilišče Radenci, home to the famous mineral water rich in CO2. Then slowly return to Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice through the Slovenian region of Pomurje and the Pannonian Plain.
Difficulty level of the stage: easy
Length: approximately 48 km.
Day 2: The Hungarian tour
The cycling route to Hungary leads through the sparsely populated area of the protected Goričko Natural Park. When you reach the Hungarian pottery village of Magyarszombatf, we recommend visiting local pottery craftsmen and returning to Slovenia via Szentgyorgyvolgy and Nemesnep. In Slovenia, the cycling route will guide you to Kobilje and then to Lake Bukovnica, where you can visit St. Vitus’ Well and experience the beneficial effects of some 50 healing energy points located in the area around the lake. Before returning to Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice, stop in the village of Filovci, known for its pottery tradition.
Difficulty level of the stage: medium
Length: approximately 55 km and 400 m of ascent
Day 3: The Goričko Nature Park
On the third day, you will discover the Goričko Nature Park with your bikes. Its hilly terrain is suitable for cyclists who are able to overcome cycling stages of medium difficultly. Choose local roads with little traffic, while the main experience of the day is a visit to Lake Lendava and the largest Slovenian castle of the same name. Where there are castles, there are also dragons and you will find out more about them on the way! (Photo: Jošt Gantar,
Difficulty level of the stage: medium
Length: approximately 54 km
Day 4: The Croatian tour
Day four of the cycling adventure will start with a comfortable ride across the Pannonian Plain and along typical Pannonian villages to the Mura River. Hop on the ferry in the village of Bistrica and then cycle to the village of Razkrižje on the border with Croatia. Bioenergy points and the beneficial Ivan’s Spring await you. On the Croatian side, in the village of Gibina, you will enter the Croatian region of Međimurje. The path will take you back to the Mura River and Sv. Martin na Muri, the northernmost point of Croatia. There you can visit an old ship mill and a rich ethnological collection. Cross the bridge in Hotiza and turn back to Slovenia, towards Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice.
Difficulty level of the stage: easy
Length: approximately 62 km
Day 5: The Jeruzalem and Kog wine roads
The final stage of your cycling adventure will take you to Beltinci, where you can visit the old-timers museum in the castle park. Proceed through the Slovenian region of Štajerska to Ljutomer. The final part of this stage is the steep ascent to the wine roads of Kog and Jeruzalem, which is appropriate for cycling enthusiasts. At the top, treat yourself to the well-deserved wine tasting in a typical wine cellar and to a lunch break before slowly returning back to Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice.
Difficulty level of the stage: medium or easy
Length: no more than 40 km
