Cycling across Prekmurje

Pedal through flatlands and hills!

The best way to explore Prekmurje is by bicycle. The locals are used to cyclists and no one will blow the horn right behind your rear tyre or overtake you close by. Instead of the usual stress of a cyclist in traffic, you will feel the wind in your hair, enjoy the smell of mown grass, the wavy wheat fields, the hum of farm machinery, the clattering of the storks and the murmur of the water while pedalling over cycling trails, local roads and steep hills. We invited three influential bloggers to this unique cycling experience. They have seen many parts of the world from their bike, but not yet Prekmurje. Check out their #storyofprekmurje!

Sandra Šuc is a versatile athlete. Her number one passion is hiking but we persuaded her to switch the hiking backpack for a bicycle. She discovered that there is more to Prekmurje than just vast fields and meadows. There is the hilly landscape of Goričko, where some ascents compete with the steepest slopes that Sandra has ever overcome.

Dino Lanzaretti

Dino Lanzaretti is a cyclist with a soul. On his cycling wanders, the frisky Italian has travelled from the hottest African deserts, to the ice cold Siberian tundra. Many believe him to be an extreme traveller, but he describes himself as an incorrigible dreamer, travelling around the globe in the search for happiness. This time he found it in Prekmurje.

Anna Spielmann

Anna Spielmann is a professional mountain biker, a member of the Austrian national team and without a doubt a contestant at the next Summer Olympics. The amiable 20-year old took the advantage and made the Prekmurje hills her exercise venue before the next mountain bike rally. Every one of her ascents was incredibly fast and adrenaline rush!

Peter Ščernjavič

Peter Ščernjavič is an entertainer at Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice. The talkative Prekmurje local every day cycles to his work from Murska Sobota. He is an expert on the land of storks, which made him the perfect choice for Sandra's, Anna's and Dino's host. He prepared an interesting cycling tour for them. Route: Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice – Vučja Gomila – Rotunda, Selo – Bukovnica – Bukovnica Lake – PANNart Craft House, Dobrovnik – Ocean Orchids Tropical Garden, Dobrovnik – Bogojina – Puhan Traveller Farm, Bogojina – Passero Rural Chocolate Boutique, Tešanovci – Terme 3000 – Moravske Toplice
Route description: Partly macadam, mostly asphalt paved with numerous short and steep ascents and descents. It is routed over local roads, cycling routes and macadam trails in the forest. It is suitable for fit cyclists.
Duration: Whole-day cycling trip with numerous stops and sight-seeing.
Length: 43 km
Bike selection: The best selection is a trekking bike, suitable for macadam roads or, as an option, a mountain bike. Cyclists who are less prepared are recommended to rent an electric bike, because of the upward slopes in the Goričko region.

A charming round church

At the edge of the Selo village, amidst meadows and fragrant lime trees, you will find a miniature round church. The rotunda – a round church dedic ...ated to St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary – is an exceptional monument to Romanesque architecture and Gothic painting. It was built in the 13th century, according to some by Templars. The interior of the dome is ornamented by frescos depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus. The church is open for visitors every day.

A lake with magical energy

The Bukovnica Lake wins people over with special energy. The small forest surrounding it features a trail past 26 energy points, where one can enjo ...y the beneficial effect offering relief from various problems of the body and soul. A touch of romance in the green little forest is conjured up by the tiny Chapel of St. Vid, where you can wash your face, eyes or quench your thirst. Water from the Spring of Vid is believed to restore energy and have healing effects on sight, hearing, digestive system, nervous system and skin. Every 15^th of June several thousands of pilgrims gather at the chapel for a blessing.

Skilled craftsmen from Prekmurje

At the PANNart Craft House, recognisable from afar by the pretty majolicas decorating the fence in front of the house, already forgotten craft skil ...ls come to life. This is where masters of crafts from Prekmurje showcase their products: potters exhibit useful and decorative pottery ware, weavers display ornamental figures and baskets made of bast and wicker and masters of gingerbread present their decorative gingerbread cookies. Visiting this place is an excellent opportunity to test your handicraft skills by making your very own piece of art from pottery, bast, wicker or gingerbread dough, and use it to decorate your home.

Beautiful orchids and tropical plants

Believe it or not, you will find a small tropic forest in the midst of Prekmurje plains! In the tropical garden in Dobrovnik, which is heated by wa ...rm thermal water, you can rest your eyes on beautiful orchids in a variety of colours. You can also admire interesting tropical and subtropical plants from all over the world: bananas, avocado, vanilla, papaya, mango, pineapple, ylang ylang, tara, ginger and carambola. The extensive collection of colourful flamingo flower plants and a rich selection of climbing plants will impress every fan of tropical nature.

The White Dove by Plečnik

The village of Bogojina, located just at the entrance to the Goričko Natural Park, boasts an exquisite church that is believed to be one of the mos ...t beautiful buildings of modern sacral architecture in Slovenia. Owing to the snow-white exterior, it is referred to by locals as the White Dove and was designed by the renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. The interior is adorned with paintings and decorated with marble pillars. You can proceed from the church to vineyards in the hilly Goričko region or cycle down the trail between wheat fields towards Tešanovci.
Homemade Prekmurje specialities

The Puhan Traveller Farm is located atop of Vršič nad Bogojino, offering a lovely view of the famous White Dove church and the fields and meadows o ...f Prekmurje. Here you will be served homemade Prekmurje dishes, such as bograch stew, blood sausages with bujta repa (sour turnip hot pot), dödole (baked potato dumplings), prekmurska gibanica(Prekmurje layer pastry), retaš (Prekmurje strudel), the dessert posolanka and many more Prekmurje specialities. All ingredients for the dishes are produced at the farm in Černelavci, where they breed pigs, grow vegetables and farm 11 hectares of fields. The farm is most known for its Prekmurje ham, which has been assigned the quality certificate.

After every cycling trip comes the time for a reward! The Passero rural chocolate boutique in Tešanovci is without a doubt the best choice for the ...last stop of a cycling tour. The story of the boutique is the story of love. It is run by Tomaž, a young man, who on a special occasion gave his beloved Jasmina chocolate pralines he made himself. That is how the idea of a chocolate boutique came about! They both create chocolate – they draw inspiration mainly from the Prekmurje environment, tradition and the changing seasons. Delicious chocolate and mouth-watering pralines available in the flavour of pumpkin, prekmurska gibanica, Jurka grapes, Traminer and elder are a guarantee that you will taste all the sweetness of Prekmurje!
