Sights and Trips
The Ptuj Cellar
Ptuj has long been known as a town of vine and wine. Thanks to the fertile soil in Haloze and Slovenske gorice and the mild continental climate, the first vineyards on these rolling plains by the Drava were established in ancient times, when this area was in Roman hands. In Roman times, wine was popularised as the drink of the gods and it was an indispensable part of a hedonistic lifestyle. This still holds true today in Ptuj, with its wine cellars that are several centuries old, the oldest Slovenian wine dating back to 1917 and the many fine wines that are produced here.
The oldest preserved wine cellar in Ptuj is in the Minorite monastery. In the centuries that followed, the Church was joined in producing and selling wine first by the Ptuj nobility and later by the middle classes as well.
The Ptuj Castle and Museum
On the last hill of Slovenske gorice, which almost reaches the Drava, there stands a mighty fort - the Ptuj castle. This strategically significant location, from which a large area of flat land can be observed and monitored, has always attracted settlers. Archaeological finds have shown that the hill was first settled at the end of the Stone Age or beginning of the Bronze Age (around 2100-1750 BC). The remains of pottery and stone axes from this time can be seen in the archaeological collection of the Ptuj Regional Museum.
